Her controversial poem titled "Athid" put her on the spotlight as the poem directly criticized the past dictatorial leadership in Ethiopia. According to rummers, she left Ethiopia after the poem received backlash from government officials. It was rumored that she was forced to leave the country after officials intimidated her and her family.

Meron returned to Ethiopia recently after years of hiding.
